If you love creamy, sweet goodness covered in a hard shell of chocolate, then this is the treat for you! It only uses 3 ingredients: OREOs, cream cheese, and chocolate. It’s amazingly simple! Normally I don’t like making things with pre-made items, but this recipe is SO delicious that I don’t care!!
So today is my brother’s birthday; he’s turning 14 already!! He requested that I make these cookie balls since he loves them so much. They’re super decadent, but he still insists on eating 3 or 4 each time. We got a pre-made cake at the last minute today so that we had some extra sweets because, what’s a birthday without cake?! The cake that we got just said “Happy” on it for some reason. So I decided to just get it, make some buttercream, and write “Birthday” on it.
Making buttercream didn’t turn out so well. It ended up super runny and sugary and gross. I don’t know what happened!! I tried adding heavy cream and whipping it, hoping it would give it some more structure, but that didn’t work. Buttercream is always so hard for me to make. In fact, I don’t think I can even remember the last time I made a buttercream that turned out right. Is that just me or is it hard for anyone else?! Maybe the recipes I’m using are just messed up?
Birthdays are always fun at my house. We usually get to pick a movie to watch, open presents, pick where we want to go out to eat, and then have cake and ice-cream! I usually make the cake (even when it’s my own birthday 🙂 because I really love making and especially decorating cakes. For my brother Zach’s birthday today, I just made these cookie balls. He said he didn’t want a cake (weird kid!).
These cookie balls are fairly easy to make. The hardest part is probably coating the balls in chocolate. I usually have to use two forks, roll the ball around in the chocolate, use the forks to scoop it out, and then place it onto a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. For an added touch/pop of color, sometimes I will drizzle colored chocolate on top. The best part of this treat is probably that you can use just about any flavor of OREO: original, golden, mint, etc.
- 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
- 42 OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 3-1/2 cups)
- 4 pkg. (4 oz. each) semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted
- Mix cream cheese and 3 cups cookie crumbs until blended.
- Shape into 1.5 inch balls, about 24 balls. Freeze for 10 min.
- Dip balls in melted chocolate (if the chocolate is too thick, mix in about 1 tsp vegetable oil to thin out); place in single layer in a shallow parchment paper-lined pan.
- Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Keep refrigerated.
Do you like original OREOs or the golden kind?
Do you have a fail-proof buttercream recipe that you can recommend to me?
